Our History

A big dream. An even bigger frontier where anything is possible.

1998, Nobel Prize

Nitric oxide capabilities lead to Nobel Prize: The discovery of the capabilities of nitric oxide as a signalling molecule in the cardiovascular system results in Dr. Robert Furchgott, Dr. Louis Ignarro, and Dr. Ferid Murad receiving the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

2007, Ikaria Formed

Ikaria is formed: Ikaria, Inc. is founded – a fully integrated biotherapeutics company focused on clinical research, manufacturing, and commercialization in the critical care environment. Its flagship product INOMAX® and its comprehensive offering INOtheraphy® make for a profitable and well-established business.

2008, Terlipressin Acquired

Terlipressin is acquired: Ikaria acquires the North American rights to terlipressin from Orphan Therapeutics, LLC. Terlipressin is being studied for the treatment of hepatorenal syndrom (HRS) Type 1, a condition that results in acute kidney failure in patients with late-stage liver chirrhosis. Ikaria later acquired the New Drug Application (NDA) and the Investigational New Drug (IND) application for terlipressin, assuming all future development and ownership of the drug in North America and Australia.

2009, IK-5001 Acquired

IK-5001 is acquired: Ikaria acquires the exclusive worldwide license to IK-5001 from BioLineRx, where it is known as BL-1040. IK-5001 is being studied for preventing cardiac remodeling and subsequent congestive heart failure following acute myocardial infarction.

Today, Innovation and Expansion

Today, Ikaria rapidly moves forward with an innovative, expanding pipeline: At Ikaria, we offer a deep late-stage pipeline of potentially groundbreaking products in critical care, as well as robust clinical research and development, business development, and commercialization. These strengths define out leadership role in the critical care world.
